Assisted Living and Community Residential Developments for the Sisters of Mercy

We worked with communities in Dublin, Limerick and Tipperary to design sustainable solutions in line with the needs and ethos of this religious community that are universally accessible and adaptable for ageing well. The convents have won RIAI and SEAI awards for the successful introduction of energy efficiency systems into protected structures.

ST ANNE’S CONVENT, BOOTERSTOWN
Energy efficient refurbishment of protected structure and two new building extensions to accommodate community residential Archive and Education Centre. One of three finalists announced at the 2010 SEAI awards for Energy Sustainability in the Built Environment.

MATER CONVENT, DUBLIN
An award winning model for the successful integration of sustainable building strategies adjacent to a working hospital and a protected structure. The low energy design principles resulted in significantly reduced energy usage for the resident community. The convent building was the winner of the SEAI Excellence in Building Design & Specification award in 2007.

MOUNT ST VINCENT’S, LIMERICK
The new convent building provides a sustainable and universally accessible future-proofed home for the community, cognisant of the surrounding protected mature trees and protected structures. Key elements of airtightness, insulation and environmentally responsible materials were used throughout, including innovative supply-air windows (SAWs), a green sedum roof, a rainwater harvesting tank, a wood-pellet boiler and roof-mounted solar panels.

CONVENT OF MERCY, TEMPLEMORE
Restoration and refurbishment of protected structure to provide universally accessible and appropriate accommodation for the elderly community. The works included rationalisation of outbuildings, extensive landscaping, a new timber-clad extension to house services spaces, a new sun room onto the garden, and installation of a wood pellet boiler.
