Creative Sligo Initiative & Partnership EU Bid

The Creative Sligo Initiative began as a cultural mapping project to develop a strategy for integrated social, cultural and economic development of the Sligo area. It has since evolved into a Sligo-led North-Western partnership bid to the EU.

The original local area mapping project took place in Greenfort Sligo in 2008. It generated a vision, strategy and implementation framework for the future regeneration of the Sligo area and informed the Review of the Sligo Development Plan. The work also led to the development of the Creative Sligo Initiative (CSI) on behalf of the County Development Board in 2010.

The CSI concept is to harness the wealth of existing creative and cultural industries in the area to foster cohesive and sustainable social and economic development. Extensive workshopping with local social inclusion and economic groups resulted in the establishment of an innovative creative public private partnership in 2011 for CSI.

The CSI partnership has since expanded to include partners in the North-Western region, Northern Ireland and Scotland. It is part of a 2011 Sligo-led Western Development Commission partnership bid to the EU to support the economic and social development of creative and cultural industries at local, national and European levels.
